Floridian Frank De Los Reyes wasn’t wearing a helmet when he crashed his Harley-Davidson in 2008
My governor is an absolute idiot.
I just learned that Rick Snyder repealed Michigan’s decades-old motorcycle helmet law yesterday. So now we have to deal with the likelihood that my state will soon be populated by even more people whose signatures consist of “X”s and who think Rush Limbaugh is a voice of reason.
Under the new law, riders 21 and over can ride helmetless if they’ve passed a safety course or have been licensed to operate a motorcycle for at least 24 months. Oh, and they’re required to obtain additional insurance in case they crash. (Motorcycle passengers also have to be 21 and carry additional insurance if they want to ride sans helmet.)

I visited the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety’s (IIHS) website and learned that the number of motorcycle-related deaths in 2007 was about 37 times the number in cars, and that almost 4,300 cyclists died in 2009. Clearly, motorcycles are dangerous. Yet Michigan’s chief executive – a member of the party that wants to insert ultrasound devices into women’s genitalia and determine who can get married yet claims to be the “party of less government” – apparently believes he, not the experts, knows what’s best for motorcyclists.
More from the IIHS:
- Helmets are the principal countermeasure for reducing crash-related head injuries, a leading cause of death among unhelmeted riders.
- The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) reported that 25 studies of the costs of injuries from motorcycle crashes "consistently found that helmet use reduced the fatality rate, probability and severity of head injuries, cost of medical treatment, length of hospital stay, necessity for special medical treatments, and probability of long-term disability.”
- A 1996 NHTSA study showed average inpatient hospital charges for unhelmeted motorcyclists in crashes were eight percent higher than for helmeted riders ($15,578 compared with $14,377).
- According to a 2000 motor vehicle occupant survey conducted by NHTSA, 81 percent reported that they favored mandatory helmet use laws for motorcyclists.
- Among motorcyclists who reported not always wearing helmets while riding, 57 percent said that a helmet law would encourage full-time helmet use.
So now we have another example of how my beloved Great Lake State, once a national leader in forward-thinking public policy, is going backwards faster than a stick of butter melts in the sun. Say what you will about government regulations, but this one made sense and protected public health.
Snyder’s signature on Senate Bill 291 proves that he’s no tough nerd, shrewd politician or misunderstood public servant. He’s just an idiot who’s not above pandering to the knuckle-dragging segment of Michigan’s population – which is about to get bigger.

Perhaps after the knuckle draggers are thined out from not wearing a helmet, explain to me why I will have to pay more insurance, even though I wear my helmet. Nice job Pat
ReplyDeleteAt least the helmetless riders would have a lesser chance of infecting the gene pool. Not wearing a helmet while operating a fast moving two-wheeled crotch rocket is a recipe for disaster. I can't remember the last time I saw a bicyclist without a helmet, and those are NOT mandatory. It's disturbing how common sense escapes some people!
ReplyDeleteI agree that not wearing a helmet is idiotic but what the hell does Rush have to do with it?
ReplyDeleteInsert ultrasound equipment into women's genitalia? First of all, that's not how an ultrasound works. Second, shrillness won't help your argument. Third, what do you care?
ReplyDeleteI did not see your motorcycle experience listed in this post, Friend.
ReplyDeleteThe statistics you quoted were spectacular though, I really like how you hyperlinked to the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety. Because, I mean, with "Safety" in the title, I bet they wouldn't skew statistics to meet their needs. Since you like statistics though, here's one, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), there were 4,502 motorcyclist deaths and 4,280 pedestrian deaths in 2010. So, would you support legislation to wear helmets while walking along roadways? It clearly is almost as dangerous as riding a motorcycle.
Also, an accident on a motorcycle is inherently more dangerous than in a car to begin with, seeing as you have no metal frame encasing your body. That freedom is one of the greatest appeals, but also the greatest risks. I understand strapping a helmet on might increase your chance of surviving, but is safety all that exists?
I've ridden a motorcycle for going on 15 years now, and I don't think it was due to the outstanding safety record of motorcycles. If "safe" riders want to wear a helmet, fine. If "unsafe" riders don't, fine. But last I checked we allegedly live in the Land of the Free, so let's leave the decision to them.

Couldn't agree more!!!
DeleteI wear a helmet myself, but I believe an adult should have the right to NOT wear one if they see fit. I'm sick and tired of this commie government turning the USA into a nanny state....oh, lets see... Europe is that way...look at the shape they're in....Need I say more?! Don't tell me that we should have everyone wear helmets just because you THINK that you might have to pay more insurance!!! You have no principles....what about the principles of freedom?! At what "cost" do you give up your liberties???
DeleteAgree we should have a choice. but in referance to the stat you posted. It is just as skewed as you claim the others to be. What is the percentage of motorcycle riders that die compared to percentage of pedestrians? More people walk in crosswalks than ride motorcycles. I have been riding for over twenty years and choose to wear a helmet because most of the ridrs I know have had accidents and many have died. Famous motorcyclist quote -There are those who have wreck and those that will wreck. I have been lucky so far. To all the riders out there with or without a helment. Be watchful and have fun!
DeleteThese laws are just like the ones that make it illegal to cruise down hills in neutral because it is unsafe.
ReplyDeleteGod forbid we ever do anything precarious in our lives. I am so fortunate to have a government spend so much time and money on making these laws so they can protect sheep like us on every facet of our lives.
No one needs extra sugar, so we have made it illegal to sell Extra Large Sodas. Incandescent lightbulbs are banned. No more plastic grocery bags. Trans-Fats have no place in any foods.
I am so grateful to live in our pink padded nursery home.
What the hell? 9 People a day in the US alone drown in swimming pools!? BAN ALL SWIMMING POOLS IMMEDIATELY. Damned knuckle draggers owning pools? What were they thinking..
please keep your political views to yourself. i stopped reading after your pathetic ranting.
ReplyDeleteIf they dont want to wear helmets, thats their choice. Why get all pissy about it? How is the governor an idiot? Its a riders choice to wear a helmet, this law does not require them to go helmetless.
ReplyDelete1. The governor's an idiot because he panders to the lowest common denominator within the electorate instead of listening to medical and consumer protection professionals.
ReplyDelete2. We all pay the costs associated with uninsured and underinsured riders who exeercise their free will and ride helmetless - including via higher insurance premiums and reduced access to emergency services.
3. I'm pissy because that's kind of the point of this blog. Don't worry - I'm not losing sleep over the issue.
I see the point about pedestrians not wearing helmets has been ignored. When a pedestrian is hit doesnt that affect insurance. Like all left liberals its all about control.
ReplyDeleteAs an avide motorcycle rider, I would never ride without a helmet simply because I believe it would be crazy not to. But here's the catch...what I believe does not trump what another person may believe. Who are we to tell someone they should have to wear a helmet? It is every riders choice to protect themselves or not to. Just as it's everyones responsibility to pay their own bills, cut their own grass, buy their own food, essentially...take care of themselves. The freedom to choose for one's self is the key here. What business does the government, be it State or Federal to dictate to an individual how they are to protect themselves or conduct their lives?
ReplyDeleteAgain...I believe it is crazy not to wear a helmet on a motorcycle, but other riders can choose for themselves what form of protection they wish to employ.
The only mandates that should be in place are for children's safety, as they are not the ones choosing their own safety measures. Sadly, there are way too many ignorant adults out there who care nothing for protecting their children as evident by the many children NOT placed in seatbelts or riding in an adults lap without a seatbelt.
As for bicycle helmets...personally, I think they are a complete joke. They're ugly and absolutely unnecessary for everyday riding. One might as well wear one full time, should they fall or trip over an object. We are an over-kill society...believing that we should cover and protect every part of ourselves, in the unlikely event disaster might rear it's ugly head and strike us down.
Personal Choice...that's what's important!
